Our symbol is the apple crate because it is part of our identity and heritage as well as that of the Shenandoah Valley where we reside. We are a small family winery perched on a high ridge in the heart of the Shenandoah Valley. The property at Barren Ridge
has been productive now for four generations of the Higgs family. The land was originally purchased in 1897 by Wilson Asbury Higgs and has evolved over time from apple orchard and barrel making site in the early 1900s to what it is today.... a modern working winery producing excellent, award-winning wines and offering special, authentic, and unique experiences.
Our soils, our climate, our altitude, our people, and our terroir all help us to make enjoyable wines in all varieties- white, red, rosé, and sparkling. Come bathe in our welcoming atmosphere and experience this special place in the Shenandoah Valley, where we greet you with open arms. We wish for everyone to slow down, relax, celebrate, and share what has been created here. Take a moment out of time to breathe deeply and savor each unique and special moment of life and perhaps find your peace while viewing our beautiful sunsets over the Allegheny mountains.
Grapes are a reflection of the earth. They change dramatically depending on their environment: what side of the hill they grow on and even the character of the people growing it.
Our wine exhibits the ancient mineral-rich soils of the Shenandoah Valley. We don’t try to replicate any other wine. We take advantage of what’s in the soil and cultivate the flavor that is possible here. This results in a crispness to our wine, an elegant, more austere wine that is a pure reflection of the soil.
